I was reading through a slew of responses on Slashdot in response to what some see as problems in the U.S. education system, and I came across this interesting (and very insightful) comment. From everything I’ve seen on the Japan side, it’s absolutely true.

I agree with the comment about dividing students into “care” and “don’t care.” I’ve always felt I could teach someone who wanted to learn and tried, no matter how low-level that person’s skills might be. On the other hand, trying to teach someone who doesn’t care or actively doesn’t WANT to learn reminds me of the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Unfortunately our system today feels if he won’t drink, throw him in! If he still won’t drink, throw the horse-handler in, too!
