it’s definitely winter

December 14th, 2005

wake up to a freezing apartment, see your breath
muted crunch of snow tires rolling over powder
smell of kerosene heaters, and one wood stove
two old men shovelling snow, laughing at each other across the street
icicles long enough to drive through dracula’s heart (and still have some left over)
jingle bells muzak playing in the seven-eleven

yep, it’s definitely winter

pencil carvings

December 10th, 2005

I’m at work on Saturday. But the bright side is that I can goof off in the staffroom and get paid for it.

But I’m not the only one with a lot of spare time on my hands:

it’s crunch time

December 5th, 2005

The crunch of snow, that is.

Snow covers rooftops and bushes.

Saturday morning I awoke early to go to lunch with the local international association. When I stepped out my door, the world was covered in snow. Eventually we all met up in a cabin at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by the accoutrements of the inaka: rice fields and clumps of forest. One tuft of trees sheltered a small shrine and graveyard, evident from the bright red torii (gate) at its edge. Because everything was so picturesque, of course I didn’t have my camera with me. I suppose it will just get more and more incredible as the year continues. But of course this means the motorbike is in the garage. Oh well. You can’t have it all.

Christmas songs

December 2nd, 2005

I was trying to explain the meaning of some xmas songs and I realized how difficult it is. Ever try to explain what a “one-horse open sleigh” is? You know, I don’t even know what the hell “figgy pudding” is. “Bells on bobtail”?? Is this even English?
