Buy, buy, buy!

August 19th, 2005

Wow, this really has been a week for extravagant purchases. Yesterday I bought a used washing machine to replace the old one, and after I get paid today it’s back to the bike shop to get an armored jacket and some rain gear.

So why did I buy another washing machine? Well, let me explain how older washing machines in Japan work. The machine has two tubs, one for rinsing and one for spinning. You have to stand there in front of the machine and turn the tap on to fill the rinsing tub, watching to make sure it doesn’t overflow. Then you wait 5 minutes while it washes and churns in the rinsing tub. Then you move all the laundry out into the spinner, where it spins for a few minutes. Meanwhile you have to drain the other tank manually and then fill it back up again with clean water. By the time that’s done, the spinner has stopped and you need to move all your clothes back into the rinser. Now do all that again to spin out the rinse water. That’s one load. Now honestly, if you have to stand there the whole time, why would you buy a machine for this? By this point, you might as well get a washboard and a pail of soapy water and just scrub the damn laundry by hand. So yeah, that’s why I went out and spent a hundred bucks on a real washing machine.

I know you warned me not to buy this…but I needed a way to get around the countryside and the streets are so narrow. Trust me, this is safer than one of those little tin can cars. It’s more maneuverable! *wink*

And oh my god is it ever so fun. Not as big a motor as most American bikes, so it’s harder for the bike to run away from me. Not that I’m that kind of driver.

This is a Kawasaki ZZR250. And it’s SO MUCH FUN.

The cost was about $3000USD, including compulsory (liability) insurance for 2 years, and comprehensive insurance for 1 year. The dealership threw in a nice Snell-approved helmet and two pairs of riding gloves free of charge. Quite nice. Now all I need is some rain gear. I’m going to get a riding jacket and some pants too.

Dragon Canoe!

August 17th, 2005

Sunday morning, when I was otherwise bored and had nothing to do, I decided to ride my bike to the river. What do you know, but the Kami-town Dragon Canoe Race was on! One person sat in the back, on the rudder. Another was in the front with a drum, a la Ben Hur (ramming speed!) The others indulged in some “Row Row Row Your Boat”.

Unbeknownst to me, but knownst to my supervisors who were also there, there was an amateur segment, which they intended to enroll me in. And so, in my jeans and black t-shirt, I found myself aboard a dragon canoe, with a paddle in my hands. No, I was not on peyote.

Dragons race to the finish

There was a magnitude 6.8 quake centered in southern Miyagi about 11:45. Knocked the clock off the TV set. No real damage though.

Here I am stuck behind enemy lines while the school (and for me the Internet) is behind locked doors. I’m also stuck without transportation until tomorrow. Apparently this is one of those holidays which is not on any calendar. Lovely.

Just 400 yen, not sure why I didn’t buy it, heh.

Wishing to catch one clipping point: FINAL LAP. Pole to finish for winning run. INVINCIBLE.
