Last night when I came home from watching a movie, there was a Ford Explorer parked in front of the mailbox, right where I usually park. I was a bit peeved, but I pulled into the driveway behind Ryan's van.
This afternoon I went on a McDonald's run for dinner, remembering that the SUV was still parked in my spot, and again pulling into the driveway when I returned.
At 1 in the morning I was playing a video game in the living room and heard a loud BANG, followed by a car alarm going off. I figured it was someone breaking into a car, so I peeked out the front door. Someone in a white Nissan Altima had run full-on into the SUV parked in front of our house. No brake noise, no skid marks. I ran up to the vehicle to make sure nobody was hurt. Thankfully the driver was okay... if a bit shaken up. Having an airbag punch you in the face can do that.
By this point a crowd was starting to gather, and it wasn't long before the firetruck and ambulance rolled up. Followed by a patrol car. Then another, and another, and another. (By this time the ambulance and firetruck had left.)
So of course the Nissan is completely totalled, and the Explorer was pushed a few meters down the road with one wheel lifted onto the curb. Firefighters said it looked like the rear axle was cracked, which would be an expensive repair. My car would have been parked there had the neighbor's not been; I had parked there for the past 3 weeks.
The nice thing about all this was that I finally got to meet my neighbors, one of which was a very cute girl from across the street. Amazing how neighbors here never talk. It takes us something catastrophic to gather us all in one area and introduce each other. Helluva way to meet, eh? But I guess we finally know the neighbors.
And the girl driving the car? She blew 0.13.
