Late evening, Aobayama

July 20th, 2004 by Jeff Leave a reply »

Here are a couple photos from the mountain I hike up several times a week to get to lab. These are from the trip back down the mountain.

Overcast dusk of Aobayama, summer
Shot from the rail, low shutter speed

Large white flowers, about 15 to 20cm in diameter
Any idea what this flower is called?

Using the orchid knowledge that runs down my family (but never actually got passed to me), I’d say its a dendrobium.

I stopped and wondered about those flowers too–very pretty and I’d never seen anything like it before, certainly not wild. I was thinking some kind of lily since I’m always hearing about suzuran and yuri in Japanese but then I don’t actually have any clue…

I take my comment back. Orchids need to be grown in a greenhouse, and there’s no way it can grow wild on Aobayama. More likely to be yuri.

It’s some kind of lily. Trust me.

It’s a Stargazer lilly. Dont ask why I know this,I just do.
