June 10th, 2004from the mailbag
June 9th, 2004Today, dear viewers, I will draw a letter from the many fanmails I get every day. Or I will make one up. It goes something like this:
Dear Jeff,
what would you look like as a japanese cartoon, and what would it be about?
-james f
To answer this unasked question, I will show you a portrait that a real Japanese girl named Yukari drew of me.
So this is me in a Japanese cartoon. I think my cartoon would be about my craaaazy antics as a foreign guy in Japan. And it would have lots of craaaazy women, acting all craaaazylike. And maybe a big robot thrown in for good measure. Look, I even have blue hair! That’s lookin’ pretty nice.
Start of the rainy season
June 8th, 2004The rainy season started yesterday. It’s not usually rain in the absolute sense of the word, but more like little tiny drops that help keep your contacts from drying out. Every once in awhile, like last night, it will rain heavily for an hour or two, but everyone says it won’t be sunny for a few more weeks.

day at the beach
June 5th, 2004By chance I stumbled upon a group of friends planning to bicycle to the beach. After an hourlong trek (the last of which was through farmland) we finally arrived. While the rest of the gang hitched the bikes together I took the opportunity to smile back and wave to some girls who had just arrived. They chattered amongst themselves as we lugged our food to a favorable location. I later took the opportunity to go chat it up and introduce myself to the 7 of them and I think it went rather well.
But anyway, Joey and I lit off bottle rockets, everyone ran around in sand and surf, and it was a very good Saturday.

I am a windshield
June 3rd, 2004On the bike ride back from lab I collided with one large cicada. Then I swallowed a mosquito before ending the flights of two more large insects.
If it stays this humid I am certain there will be more of them.
