a busy Tokyo day

May 23rd, 2004

So what did I do today? Well depending on your definition of today, it may have started with me placing a pink flower in a girl’s hair. But I prefer to define the start of a day as the first waking moments after sleeping, in which case I began the day listening to Angelo snoring. And that was a perfect catalyst to get me out of the house.

So before hopping on a train I had to collect my thoughts and figure out where to go. So a quick trip to a coffeeshop helped me in that department; I bought a bottle of milk tea and hopped on the Yamanote loop for Ueno. Besides having a big park and several museums, Ueno is special to me because it was the first place I stayed in Japan 2 years ago and also the first place I got lost in Japan. So I figured it would be a good place to lose myself for part of a day. I bought some takoyaki (fried octopus) from a street vendor and sat down to watch people.

After half an hour or so I got a bit bored and took a stroll around the lake, taking photos as I went. Just as I felt like I had spent enough time there and started to leave the park, guess what kind of procession blocks my way? That’s right, a mikoshi! And since I had little better to do, I followed them and made audio recordings.

After all that I was off to the local market, where I drank liquid from some sort of fruit and bought chestnuts from a very vigorous vendor. (Yay alliteration!) And before long my feet led me to Akihabara, heaven for anyone who likes electronics.

So then I wandered, ate some noodles, and killed time in this coffeeshop in Ueno station, which plays nothing but 80′s hits. And from here I’ll get some dinner with friends before riding back with them on a night bus.

So in conclusion, my day was paradoxically both unproductive and fruitful. Whew.

a bar on infinity’s brink

May 23rd, 2004

I am in a bar on the edge of nowhere chasing a girl who ran off with a random guy. In Ikebukuro.

Lane’s birthday

May 22nd, 2004

At the moment I’m on a shinkansen to Tokyo for Lane’s birthday party. Watching the trees and small mountain villages fly silently by is rather soothing.

Next stop, the rest of the day.

Foods: Macaroni and cheese

You simply haven’t lived until you’ve tried to eat mac & cheese with chopsticks.

typhoon?

May 20th, 2004

I guess there’s going to be a typhoon tomorrow. Hmm.

On a side note, the word typhoon seems to be of Asian origin.

Aoba Matsuri

May 18th, 2004

Here are a few photos from Saturday’s Aoba Matsuri.

Two women stand in front of a red parade float lined with small wooden panels hanging from strings. The wooden panels have Japanese writing on them.
