perils of staying late

Today visited a castle and reconstructed samurai residence on a field trip. Afterwards went to one of the last forges where Japanese swords are still made by hand. Price: ranges from 15 to 20 thousand dollars. Each. For just the blade, without hilt wrapping, handguard, or scabbard. He makes maybe 20 in a year, and sells each one.
I tried to get stuff done, really I did. It's not MY fault someone set up a Sega Saturn in the lab with Bomberman. And 7 controllers. And hooked it to the projector. THEY made me stay til after midnight.
At a German restaurant with labmates.
As you probably don't know, and definitely don't care, I've been using a system called Movable Type to run my site. To date, the software has been free; speaking as a college student, that has always been a large priority. Add to that the extensive feature list-- MT has been around for awhile, and it shows.
However, there's been some recent ugliness surrounding Six Apart's decision to charge for Movable Type. Like many other users, I don't have much of a gripe with paying people cash for something that makes publishing so easy, but I do have a problem with being forced to fork over US$100 for a newer version of software which doesn't really add anything new. They went commercial, and in the worst possible way. Those venture capital whores.
To be honest, I don't use most of the features that MT offers, like keywords or trackbacks, but I did put a bunch of time into my phone post script. Looking at my other alternatives, I'll probably go with WordPress. While I like the look of TextPattern, it doesn't support XML-RPC, which I use for all my phone posts.
Also was looking into something like PhotoStack for photo management, but I just like the flexibility of writing my own stuff. I have my own format, and while my photo album currently sucks, it isn't broken so I'm not in any hurry to fix it.
Oh, and of course ideally NONE of these changes should be visible. It's all backend stuff. No really. The only visible difference will be the lack of the Movable Type doohickey link at the bottom of the right panel.
Good luck. Take heart in the fact that you can look up words you don't know, but it may take you a few minutes for each one.
