Making mochi, and orchid photos

December 30th, 2003 by JeffByPhone Leave a reply »

Mochi is a sweet confectionery paste traditionally made around the new year. You start by pounding cooked special rice with a wooden hammer. After 15 minutes it becomes a sweet paste, which you roll into balls the size of your hand. The whole affair is similar to making Christmas cookies, with the whole family involved.

Afterwards, we took a walk through the grandfather’s garden to look at the orchids. He also has an impressive number of tropical plants.

Are you back with Mitsu now, or still with Yoshi?

Jeff, We at the Scholer house are glad you can sort of celebrate the holidays like back home. Your reference to Christmas cookies shows your memories from Christmas include one of the basic food groups, COOKIES! Happy Holidays from Todd, Dana & Ashley!
